2008: Marineland closes after 43 years

Marineland 2008

For nearly 50 years, Marineland brought fun and awe to audiences from all over the world - even the Queen who visited in 1970! By 1980 it had had three million visitors. The wonder of seeing animals - sea lions, fur seals, otters and little blue penguins – so close was a massive novelty. However, a pool can never compensate for the sea, even when the ocean is no longer the safe haven it should be, and with that Marineland closed to the public in 2008 following the death of Kelly, the last dolphin. When the last fur seals and sea lions left for Australia in 2015, Marineland was no more.
