1897: Napier floods

Waitangi Bridge 1897

On Good Friday, heavy weather caused Napier and surrounding areas to flood when the Tutaekuri overflowed at Meeanee. Ten men from Napier drowned when the rescue boats they were in were overwhelmed by flood water. When the flood waters subsided, the silt spread over the plains was used to reclaim land, which led to the establishment of Napier South.
